best invest | Forbes Global Properties February Update

Welcome to best invest | Forbes Global Properties February 2024. Türkiye has endured a winter of abundant rain which brought joy to the agricultural sector and has replenished the reservoirs for the summer months ahead, although some regions experienced consequential flash flooding.

Defence Minister Yaşar Güler and Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias have both signed a letter of intent to take part in the European Sky Shield Initiative. The document was signed at a ceremony hosted by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in Brussels. At the ceremony, Güler said: “This initiative, led by Germany, is an important step toward fulfilling NATO’s requirements while ensuring the interoperability and integration of allies. As Türkiye, we are ready to contribute to this initiative with our wide range of national capabilities. I would like to thank Germany for its coordinating role in this important initiative. We will be pleased to work with you in this initiative serving the collective defence understanding,”. Turkey has the second-largest army in NATO after the United States. Launched by Germany in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the initiative aims to strengthen NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence by facilitating the multinational acquisition and integration of a broad range of air defence capabilities by European countries.

The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) have announced that state universities will no longer conduct their own exams for international student admissions. Instead, international students can now use the results of the Turkish International Student Admission Exam (TR-YÖS) or high school grade averages such as IB, Abitur and GCE AL, to simplify the admission process. The number of countries where the TR-YÖS exam will be held has been increased from 25 to 52, expanding access for prospective students worldwide. The exam will be conducted in six languages: Turkish, German, Arabic, French, English and Russian, and will be held in 78 centres across 52 countries. The introduction of TR-YÖS aims to streamline the application process for foreign candidates seeking admission to higher education institutions in Türkiye. The first application process took place last year, with the TR-YÖS exam being held twice during the year.

The air passenger traffic in Türkiye as of the end of January surged by 8.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching 14.76 million people, the recent data released by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) showed. 7.06 million passengers travelled on domestic flights, alongside 7.7 million international passengers. Türkiye has seen a rise in the number of planes passing through its airspace in recent years, 2.1 million flights were recorded in 2023 which equates to about one aeroplane every 15 seconds. The passenger count in the country’s second-largest air hub, Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which opened its second runway at the end of 2023, reached its highest-ever figure last year with 37.1 million. In addition, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu recently announced that Istanbul Airport was planning to install a system that would enable three aircraft to independently land and take off simultaneously, which would make Türkiye the second country after the United States to operate such a system.
