The 18th Traditional Gokbel Oil Wrestling Festival was held last weekend. The weekend included a musical concert by the famous Turkish artist Kubat. The main event was won by Enes Doğan, watched by a crowd of over a thousand locals and visitors from all over the world. The cooler temperatures were very welcome as the oil drenched wrestlers exerted all their energy and tactics to secure this prestigious title. A fantastic weekend of entertainment was enjoyed by all.
Buğra Ünal, set to be Türkiye’s first male modern pentathlete at the Olympics, has had a turbulent journey to Paris 2024. Ünal trained rigorously in fencing, swimming, shooting, horse riding and running, prepared intensively in Erzurum. He had severe injuries that nearly derailed his Olympic dreams. “Falling from the horse and breaking my shoulder blades was a significant setback, undergoing two surgeries and having platinum implants was also challenging”.
Turkish gymnasts Adem Asil (the reigning world champion on the rings), and Ferhat Arıcan (on the parallel bars) are strong favorites for the Paris 2024 Olympics Finals. Elis Özbay made history as the first Turkish female rower to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympics. Türkiye’s women’s national volleyball team is set to kick off their Olympic campaign against the Netherlands. Having not lost to the Dutch since August 2018, the Sultans of the Net is poised for a strong start. Following the Netherlands match, they will face the Dominican Republic and Italy in the group stages.
